Create floristry designs using hand tied techniques

Unit Descriptor This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, prepare, produce and evaluate hand tied floral designs. It includes the presentation and wrapping of floral arrangements. This competency may apply to a range of roles in the workplace. This unit is equivalent to and replaces WRFL.7A Create Floristry Designs Using Hand Tied Techniques as packaged in WRF99.

ELEMENTPERFORMANCE CRITERIA
1 . Develop design specification for hand tied floral arrangements
  1. Customer and/or supervisor is consulted to identify job requirements and relevant parameters.

  2. Potential problems are identified and communicated to relevant personnel according to shop/studio policies and procedures.

  3. Hand tied designs are costed according to relevant legislation and shop/studio policies and procedures.

  4. Design specification is developed and confirmed with customer/supervisor and modifications to address customer requirements are implemented, if required.

2 . Apply elements and principles of design to design specifications for hand tied floral arrangements
  1. Principles of design are applied to the planning of the floral design to meet customer requirements and/or job requirement.

  2. Floral design is planned and sketched if required.

  3. Elements of design are applied to the selection of flower and plant materials.

  4. Elements and principles of design are applied to the arrangement and construction of the floral design.

3 . Prepare equipment, flower and plant materials for the production of hand tied floral designs
  1. Equipment is identified and selected according to job requirement.

  2. Unsafe equipment is recognised and reported according to relevant legislation and shop/studio policies and procedures.

  3. Flower and plant materials are selected, conditioned and prepared according to relevant legislation, shop/studio policies and procedures, product and design requirements.

  4. Unsuitable materials are recognised and dealt with according to relevant legislation and shop/studio policies and procedures.

4 . Construct hand tied floral designs to specification
  1. Selected materials and equipment are sorted and assembled in preparation area.

  2. Support methods are assessed prior to initial production.

  3. Hand tied techniques are applied according to product requirements and design specification.

5 . Plan and prepare wrapping/ packaging materials to suit hand tied floral designs
  1. Presentation and protective requirements are identified according to the design specification.

  2. Potential problems are identified and communicated to relevant personnel according to shop/studio policies and procedures.

  3. Wrapping/packaging materials and presentation materials are identified and selected according to design specification.

  4. Equipment is identified and selected according to design specification.

  5. Unsafe equipment and inappropriate materials are recognised and reported or dealt with according to relevant legislation and shop/studio policies and procedures.

6 . Wrap, pack, protect and enhance the presentation of hand tied floral designs
  1. Selected wrapping, packaging and presentation materials are assembled in an appropriate area.

  2. Floral design is wrapped, packaged and decorated according to the elements and principles of design, shop/studio policies and procedures and product requirements.

  3. Ancillary items are attached according to shop/studio policies and procedures and product requirement.

7 . Evaluate hand tied floral designs against design specification/job requirements
  1. Quality, technical and aesthetic requirements are assessed against the design specification.

  2. Variations to design specification are justified against materials and special requirements.

  3. Evaluation outcomes are used to improve future practice.
